Under the 25-year agreement, Iberdrola will supply Tri-State with the entire power generated from the project, which is planned to be built on 1,000 acres of land 23 miles south of Lamar, near the company’s existing 75MW Twin Buttes facility.

Tri-State energy management senior vice-president Brad Nebergall said: "In 2014, approximately 24% of the energy Tri-State and its member systems delivered to cooperative members was generated from renewable resources, making us one of the leading utilities in the country for using renewable power.

"The Twin Buttes II wind project further reinforces our commitment to a diverse generation fleet built on cost-effective resources."

Planned to be commissioned in 2017, the Twin Buttes II project will feature 38 turbines to generate electricity to serve approximately 30,000 households.

Tri-State supplies 44 electric cooperatives and public power districts in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and Wyoming.
