The Australian Labour Party (ALP) is preparing to issue a policy blueprint document setting a pledge to ratify the Kyoto Protocol and introduce massive carbon emissions reductions of 60% by 2050.

‘The domestic agenda includes a long term national target for deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions,’ the document says, adding: ‘A Labour government will work towards a long-term national target of 60% cuts to Australia’s year 2000 level of greenhouse emissions by 2050.’

A national emissions trading system is planned as a central measure to moving to a low-carbon economy. The party maintains that nuclear power is not appropriate for Australia.
