The world-scale refinery and petrochemical plant in Lekki, near the capital of Lagos, is considered to be the largest in Africa, and expected to help Nigeria reduce its dependency on fuel and petrochemicals imports.

UOP will provide Resid Fluid Catalytic Cracking process to produce transportation fuels from crude oil, and propylene; CCR Platforming process to produce high-octane gasoline blending components; Unicracking process to produce diesel; and Penex process to produce high-octane gasoline.

The company’s alliance partner, Process Consulting Services will provide crude distillation unit (CDU) design for the project.

UOP process, technology and equipment business senior vice-president and general manager Pete Piotrowski said: "UOP has been designing state-of-the-art refineries and petrochemical plants for more than a century, so we are well-equipped to help Nigeria develop a massive new installation to meet its domestic needs."

The refinery is expected to produce polypropylene and gasoline, diesel and jet fuel that comply with Euro V specifications for reduced emissions.
