Tepco and Mitsubishi have established two joint venture companies to implement the construction of two advanced clean coal power plants in Fukushima, Japan.
The Nakoso and Hirono integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants will be the world’s most advanced coal-fired thermal power plants and will help to revitalise the industrial base in Fukushima, the site of the 2011 nuclear disaster.
Mitsubishi Corporation Power Ltd, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc and Joban Joint Power Co Ltd have established two joint ventures – Nakoso IGCC Power GK and Hirono IGCC Power GK – to build and operate the two 540 MW power plants.
The Japanese partners will help to finance the 300 billion yen projects, which are scheduled to start commercial operation in the early 2020s. Environmental approvals have already been obtained, Mitsubishi said.
The Nakoso IGCC plant will be located next to the Nakoso power plant in Iwaki city and will start operating in September 2020. The Hirono IGCC will be located at Tepco Fuel & Power’s Hirono thermal power station in Futaba District and is scheduled to start oprations in 2021.
