Under the contract, awarded by Exelon Nuclear, Areva TN will supply 30 NUHOMS horizontal storage modules (HSM)-H used fuel storage modules for nuclear station.

The modules will complement the existing 40 units, which were also constructed onsite in 2011, at Nine Mile Point facility.

Areva TN Americas senior vice-president Greg Vesey said: "Thanks to the expertise and innovative spirit of our teams, we are able to offer Exelon a more economical used fuel storage solution by casting the modules at the Nine Mile Point site."

Designed to offers greater structural stability, the robust NUHOMS HSM-H system provides high seismic resistance through its thick reinforced concrete components, low profile, and interlinked rectangular modules.

The above ground horizontal system also provides a high level of shielding and allows the ease of aging management inspections.

The HSMs will be constructed onsite by the company in order to reduce transportation and materials cost as well as to generate savings for the customer, starting from mind-2015.

The company said that the advanced NUHOMS horizontal storage technology is currently being used by more than 40% of the US utilities.
