Under the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract, Fluor will begin construction on the facility in mid-2016.

Capable of generating enough electricity to power 400,000 homes at peak demand, the project will require an investment of $1bn.

The power station is expected to be the largest and most efficient natural gas-fueled power station in Virginia.

Fluor power business president Matthew McSorley said: "Fluor is proud to be selected by Dominion to build the largest and most efficient natural gas asset in Virginia.

"Fluor has a proven track record supporting Dominion in their goal to provide clean, reliable, and low-cost energy to their Virginia customers."

The plant will be designed by Fluor at its engineering office in Charlotte, North Carolina.

To be built on a 1,143-acre site on the Greensville and Brunswick County line, the power station is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs at the peak of construction and be operational in 2019.

The station will receive natural gas through Williams’ Transco natural gas line and the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP).

Currently, Fluor is also developing the 1,300MW Brunswick County Power Station for Dominion, located 4.5 miles from the new Greensville County Power Station.
