A new 820 MW power and water plant at Ras Laffan will be based on gas turbine generators supplied by GE Power Systems. The combined-cycle facility, fired by natural gas, is scheduled to begin commercial service during 2003. GE will provide four MS9001E turbines and generators to EnelPower, the main contractor, and under a separate contract will instal and test them. The new plant will be owned by a consortium that includes AES Oasis LLC, the Qatar Electricity and Water Corp, the Qatar Petroleum Corp and Gulf Investment Corp of Kuwait.

The turbines will be manufactured at GE’s Belfort, France facility while the generators will be built by Elin of Austria. Three are scheduled to start commercial service in March of 2003 and the fourth in August of 2003. The plant will supply power to the Qatar grid and for a new desalination facility.
