MAN Turbomaschinen AG of Germany has won the contract to supply two steam turbines together with control equipment to a pulp mill in Valdivia, Chile. The units are a 70 MW condensing turbine with steam extraction, a condenser and a generator and one 70 MW back pressure turbine which will also drive a generator. Both turbines will supply process steam to the pulp plant steam lines at a rate of 670 t/h, supplied from the turbines at 84 bar and 485°C. The condensing steam turbine, part of the company’s modular range, incorporates an axial exhaust casing and variable guide vanes for extraction control. Delivery of both turbines is scheduled for the second quarter of 2003. Celulosa Arauco y Constitucion SA, the company which owns the plant with a planned capacity of 600 000 t/year of cellulose, expects to become the largest cellulose producer in Chile when the new facility is operational. Total investment in the plant will be $2 billion.
