A high temperature gasification process is to be used in a Puerto Rican development that will see domestic waste completely recycled, without any of the ash normally associated with the incineration of refuse. If EPA approval is granted, the plant is expected to produce 45 MWe through the disposal of 1.1 million tonnes of waste annually. The Caribe Waste Technologies consortium is developing the plant at a cost of around $500 million. Output from the facility, the first of its type in the USA, will be sold to the Puerto Rican Electric Power Authority.
