Mexico • IPP Projects Mexico’s independent power market continues to develop, driven partly by growth in industry and manufacturing in regions bordering the US.

Electricité de France (EdF) said that it would bid for the Altamira III IPP project following its acquisition of a 51 per cent stake in the company developing Altamira II. EdF will acquire its stake in Electricidad Aguila de Altamira, a development company set up by Mitsubishi of Japan to build and operate the 495 MWe plant, for $280 million. The CCGT, located in the Gulf Coast region, is due to begin commercial operations in May 2002.

EnronCorp has announced that its first Mexican project is due to come on-stream in 2002. The 245 MWe facility, under development by subsidiary unit Enron de Mexico, has signed a 15 year power purchase agreement with Grupo Imsa, the Mexican steel making firm.
