Drilled to a total depth of 3347m, the well intersected approximately 18.5m of net gas within the Jurassic sandstone target.

The discovery has been confirmed by wireline logging through the recovery of gas samples to surface and establishment of a gas pressure gradient.

Woodside Global Exploration executive vice-president Philip Loader said: "Given its location, this successful exploration outcome offers future tie-back potential to Woodside’s existing Pluto infrastructure."

Pyxis-1 is located in Production Licence WA-34-L, within Western Australia’s Dampier Sub-Basin and approximately 15km north of Woodside’s producing Pluto Gas Field infrastructure.

Woodside Burrup operates WA-34-L license with 90% equity stake while Kansai Electric Power Australia and Tokyo Gas Pluto each hold 5% equity in the license.

Recently, Woodside has acquired Wheatstone LNG and Balnaves oil interests in Australia from Apache for $2.817bn while a second $854m transaction involving the Kitimat LNG project interests in Canada is expected to close next week.

Under the terms of the agreement signed earlier, Apache will sell its interest in its Australian subsidiary, Apache Julimar, which owns a 13% stake in the Wheatstone LNG project and a 65% interest in the WA-49-L block, which includes the Julimar/Brunello offshore gas fields and the Balnaves oil development.

Woodside Petroleum will also acquire Apache’s 50% stake in the Kitimat LNG project and related upstream acreage in the Horn River and Liard natural gas basins in British Columbia, Canada.
