In the light of the policy of the German government that it will phase out nuclear power, 570 German academics have signed a memorandum in favour of the continued use of nuclear power.
The academics have warned the Federal government against their decision to phase out nuclear power, and has asked it to perform a new evaluation of the future of nuclear power. Their memorandum stressed the need to take into account in any analysis the changes and improvements that have been made in reactor safety over recent years, and that there is no realistic way that nuclear power can be replaced without involving a dramatic increase in CO2 and other greenhouse gas emission levels.
