The Zambia Electric Supply Corp (Zesco) is to spend $212 million on the modernization and rehabilitation of old power generation, transmission and distribution facilities, the Times of Zambia has reported.

The Zambia Investments Centre in Lusaka has already issued Zesco with an investment licence. Work is expected to start in September.

Projects include modernization of old hydropower plants at Kafue Gorge, Victoria Falls and Kariba North. Modernization of these plants will allow Zambia to generate and export more electricity, increasing foreign exchange revenue. Zesco exports power to Tanzania, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
