As part of the agreement, OpenHydro will install an array of its Open-Centre turbines on the seabed at Alderney. This will be the first deployment of tidal turbines in the UK’s Channel Islands.
The turbines will be mounted on the seabed where no part of the structure will be visible from the surface and will be deep enough not to interfere with shipping traffic. They are expected to be deployed in 2008/2009 and particular emphasis will be placed on consulting with relevant local bodies with interests in the marine environment.
The aim of the deployment is to study and collect all relevant data so that Alderney can assess how the long term development of tidal farms will benefit the community.
