Located 120km off the Yorkshire coast, Hornsea Project One is expected to become the world’s first gigawatt scale far-from-shore wind farm.

The project covers approximately 407km2. It is scheduled to commence operations by 2020.

Atkins said it will offer a standardised approach to fabrication of the offshore substations to reduce costs at the wind farm.

Dong Energy UK country chairman Brent Cheshire said: "Standardising the design of major components is an important step towards reducing the cost of electricity generated by our future offshore wind farms.

"This contract builds on the offshore substation design work which Atkins is already undertaking for us."

The consultancy has been previously selected to provide detailed engineering design of six offshore substations for Dong at the planned Burbo Bank Extension, Race Bank, and Walney Extension offshore wind farm projects.
