Siemens has reached an agreement to construct a 4.4GW combined-cycle power plant and install wind power capacity of 2GW.
Along with local partners, Siemens will be responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for the Beni Suef combined-cycle power plant in Upper Egypt.
The power plant will be developed in four modules, each of which will comprise two H-class gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators, one steam turbine, and three generators.
Siemens will also build a factory to manufacture rotor blades for wind turbines, creating up to 1,000 jobs in the region.
Siemens Wind Power and Renewables Division CEO Markus Tacke said: "Wind power is clean and renewable, and will strengthen Egypt’s energy security at this important point in its history. Adding two gigawatt will be a significant step towards diversifying the country’s energy mix.
"Egypt has great potential for wind power generation, especially in the Gulf of Suez and the Nile Valley."
Siemens will propose to build additional combined cycle power plants with a capacity of up to 6.6GW and ten substations for reliable power supply, under two other agreements.
Meanwhile, GE has signed agreement to Egypt to supply around 2.6GW of electricity, which will be enough to power more than 2.5 million homes.
GE will supply 46 turbines, 34 aeroderivative gas turbines and 12 heavy-duty gas turbines, beginning May.
In addition, Masdar, ACWA Power and the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company have entered into an agreement to develop 1.5GW of solar projects and 500MW of wind projects in the country.
