thermal power plant

The latest is the second unit at the plant and increases the installed capacity of Barh-II to 1,320 MW.

The total installed capacity of NTPC rose to 43,803MW, comprising of 39 NTPC Stations (17 coal-based, seven combined cycle gas/liquid fuel based), seven joint ventures, and eight renewable projects, Press Trust of India reported.

Being built under contract by another state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals, Barh-II includes two units of 660MW each. Unit I was commissioned in November 2013.

Announced in 2006, Barh-II is estimated to have cost Rs73bn (approximately $1bn).

Barh-I, initiated in 1999, has been repeatedly delayed due to disputes between NTPC and Russian contractor Technopromoexport (TPE).

TPE is responsible for the design, manufacture, supply, building and commissioning of three power units of Barh-I.

According to media reports, TPE has been delaying the project asking for a hike in the project cost by $248m in addition to $190m already paid.

In January, NTPC has cancelled TPE’s contractor citing delays in completion of the project.
