Under the £60m contract, Prysmian will design, manufacture, install, and test a total of 81km of 33kV submarine cables in different cross-sections to link the 70 wind turbines and an offshore substation that form the 350MW wind farm.

Prysmian will manufacture the cables at its facility in Drammen, Norway while installation work is planned to be completed by the end of 2016.

The Wikinger offshore wind farm is located in the German waters of the Baltic Sea, approximately 34km north-east of the island of Ruegen, and near the maritime borders with Denmark, Sweden and Poland.

Featuring 70 Areva M5000-135 wind turbines, the wind farm is expected to generate enough power to meet the electricity needs of over 350,000 German households whilst reducing approximately 600,000t of CO2 emissions per year.

Prysmian secured a contract in May 2014 from 50Hertz Offshore to design, produce and install multiple 220kV high voltage alternate current (HVAC) 3-core extruded submarine cable systems between offshore wind parks within the West of Adlergrund cluster.
