The country’s all 48 nuclear reactors have been closed following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. The closure of the plants has compelled the country to import expensive fossil fuels for power generation, reports Reuters.
Documents required for the two reactors are being prepared by Kyushu Electric Power in order to pass regulatory examinations, following which the company will secure approval to resume operations, officials were quoted by the news agency as saying.
The Japan Times cited Kyushu officials as saying that the company will submit the documents for reactor 1 and reactor 2 later this month and in March respectively.
The Japanese NRA had granted permission for the basic design of nuclear reactors and safety features in September 2014.
The Sendai nuclear power station would be the first to be restarted following the closure of all reactors in Japan over safety concerns.
Meanwhile, Fukushima Governor Masao Uchibori was quoted as saying by Reuters: "We urge the government to take into full consideration the tremendous suffering from the nuclear power plant accident and make sure that future policy ensures the safety and peace of mind of all citizens."
