The grant has been provided to the company, a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, under Section 1603 of Division B of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

RG&E and New York State Electric & Gas president and CEO Mark Lynch said: "Our customers and the environment gain since these upgraded plants will continue to generate low-cost, no-carbon energy for decades to come."

More than $111m has been invested by the company into Station 5 to enhance the hydropower project’s capacity and efficiency.

The work created approximately 393 temporary construction jobs, the company said.
