Under the contract, GE will provide its 9HA gas turbine and long-term maintenance services for the gas and steam turbines while Iberdrola will be responsible for installation and balance of plant for the turnkey project.

Located at Chempark in Leverkusen, Germany, the cogeneration or combined heat and power (CHP) facility will be designed to address help meet the requirements of Germany’s carbon reduction and energy efficiency, while producing electricity and steam for Chempark businesses.

Repower project manager and Repower GuD Leverkusen CEO Dr Daniel Fritsche said: "While our business model is complex, GE and IBERDROLA demonstrated a deep understanding of what Repower needs for a cogeneration facility that will be highly efficient, flexible, and reliable, and helps meet the necessary carbon reduction and energy efficiency targets."

The final decision for construction work on the facility will be made in the course of 2015.

Expected to have overall fuel efficiency higher than 80% and steam extraction of more than 300 tons per hour, the Chempark Leverkusen plant uses the 9HA gas turbine to provide a net output of more than 570MW, to meet the needs of approximately 600,000 German homes.
