MHI said the project is being forwarded in Turkey following Japan’s recent acquisition of preferential negotiating rights.
ATMEA1 pressurized water reactor is designated for adoption under the Sinop NPP project.
The reactor was developed by ATMEA, a France-based joint venture of MHI and French energy firm Areva.
As per the plans, a nuclear power plant will be built in the Black Sea province of Sinop and will feature four reactors with a combined capacity of 4,400MW.
Construction work will be undertaken by an international consortium, which includes MHI, Japan’s Itochu, France’s GDF SUEZ and the Turkish Electricity Generation Company.
The NPP’s first unit is expected to be opened in 2023.
MHI said negotiations towards adopting the ATMEA1 are presently under way in over 10 countries globally, including Jordan and Brazil.
