The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has awarded engineering firm AMEC a strategic framework contract to provide services for the nuclear new build programme in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Under the contract, AMEC will provide consultancy support to ENEC for their four proposed nuclear reactors in Barakah, in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi. These include a range of strategic planning services right through to specific niche nuclear engineering skills.
The value of the contract has not been disclosed.
ENEC will build a total of four nuclear energy plants by 2020, pending regulatory approvals. Units 1 & 2 are already under construction, with the first plant scheduled to commence commercial operations in 2017.
"This is a hugely important contract for AMEC, and is a major step on our nuclear ambitions in the region," said Clive White, President of AMEC’s Clean Energy Europe business.
Barakah is being built by a Kepco-led consortium under a turnkey contract awarded in 2009. The four units are scheduled to start operating by 2020.
