The company will begin talks with the prefectural government of Mie in Japan for buying ten hydropower plants and two dams for about $135m, Reuters reported.

These facilities are now operated by the prefectural government and Chubu plans to begin transferring these plants in three phases starting in April 2013.

In May 2011, Chubu shut its 3,617MW Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Japan for building an 18m seawall to improve protection of the plant which is located in a quake-prone area.

The Hamaoka nuclear plant is expected to remain out of service until December 2012.
