Alstom has signed a contract with Länsi-Suomen Voima Oy, owner of the 72 MW Harjavalta hydro power plant, to retrofit and upgrade two existing generators and provide one new generator, for a total contract value of more than €10 million. The works will be carried out between 2016 and 2017, and are part of a bigger modernisation project that aims to increase the power plant output to 110 MW.
Under the scope of the contract, Alstom will refurbish and upgrade two generators, originally manufactured in 1939 and 1940. The group will supply a complete new stator, excitation system and cooling system plus refurbishment of the existing rotor and generator shaft, and will replace or refurbish the bearings. After refurbishment the generators will be upgraded to a modern design, increasing their output from 2×46 MVA to 2×53 MVA. Alstom will also supply a new 25 MVA generator, to be manufactured at the Alstom site in Bilbao, Spain.
Located in Western Finland, in the river of Kokemäenjoki, the Harjavalta hydro power was built in 1939, and is one of the most efficient power plants in Southern Finland. The drop height is 26.4 metres.
