The target is in line with the government’s pledge to cut carbon intensity by 40 to 45% by 2020 when compared to 2005 levels.

The national development and reform commission (NDRC) has also begun working on steps to attain further, large-scale reductions of carbon dioxide emissions after 2020.

NDRC vice-minister Xie Zhenhua said China is expected to work on improving carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology concepts in a bid to reduce carbon dioxide emissions over the next few decades.

Xie said the country will seek international collaboration in research and technology transfers for the CCS technology.

China plans to increase use of non-fossil-fuel by 15% by 2020, although coal will remain its primary source of energy for decades ahead, reports chinadaily.com.
