The exploration blocks WA-528-P, WA-529-P and WA-530-P, which are spread over an area of 23,170km², are situated around 220km northwest of Dampier off the coast.
The company holds operatorship for the blocks with a 50% stake, while the remaining is owned by Woodside Energy.
Chevron Australia managing director Nigel Hearne said: “Chevron Australia has discovered around 50 trillion cubic feet of gas resources, and through collaboration we hope to commercialise this gas through the timely and efficient use of existing equity or third-party infrastructure.
“This supports our position as a leading operator and long-term supplier of clean and reliable natural gas to customers in Western Australia and the region.
Chevron Australia also operates Gorgon LNG, Wheatstone LNG and domestic gas projects in the region.
In March 2017, the company commenced production from the third of the three LNG production units at the $54bn Gorgon project which is located on Barrow Island off the northwest coast of Western Australia. The three production trains have a combined capacity of 15.6 million tons per year.
The project also comprises a domestic gas plant that has a capacity to supply 300 terajoules of gas per day to Western Australia.
