The China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG) is reported to have signed an agreement with the provincial Hubei government to build China’s first inland nuclear power plant.
The new plant will be located in Xianning City, 421 km southeast of Yichang City, according to local press reports.
CGNPG has started preparation work on the project, but has yet to announce its capacity and the project timetable. The plant is part of the country’s plans to expand its nuclear generating capacity to keep pace with electricity demand growth.
China currently has 11 nuclear power reactors in commercial operation and six under construction. The country is aiming to increase its nuclear generating capacity to 40 GWe by 2020.
