With an average approval rate of just 33%, where the Planning Inspectorate was called in to adjudicate an average of 28% were approved. This compares to an average approval rate of 76% for all major applications, such as offices, dwellings and retail. The association is calling for government action to address six key areas including provision of a clear national planning statement and with local planning and appeal decisions from the Planning Inspectorate to be in line with national planning and energy policy.

BWEA chief executive Maria McCaffery commented: “The planning process has been a thorn in the side of the UK wind industry.”
