The international engineering and project management company, AMEC, has been awarded a three-year contract to provide waste treatment services to the Bohunice nuclear power plant in Slovakia.
The value of the contract has not been disclosed.
The contract covers the retrieval and treatment of some 600 cubic meters of waste from the two VVER-440 reactors at the Bohunice plant, which ceased operation in 2008 and 2010, respectively.
AMEC’s Slovakian office in Trnava developed the technology that will be used in the project, and will be responsible for project execution.
“The contract award is a recognition of the leading capabilities we have developed in waste management techniques. It builds on similar successful work we are executing in the Czech Republic and also expands our decommissioning support to Bohunice,” commented Clive White, vice president of AMEC’s Power & Process Europe business.
In May 2010, AMEC was awarded a similar five-year contract by Czech utility CEZ for the management of radioactive waste at its Dukovany nuclear power plant.
