Residents of Zimbabwe are witnessing power cuts everyday on account of deficiency of coal and overseas currency required to import power.

The energy minister stated that the nation is seeking out private investors for construction of a new 2,000 MW coal-fired power plant located close to the central town of Gokwe. The duration of the coal-fired power project is estimated at three to four years.

Zimbabwe also requires roughly $600 million to boost production capacity at its Kariba hydropower station.

The energy minister stated that the country is also contemplating construction of a new hydropower station at the Batoka Gorge situated on the Zambezi river. The plant would have 1,400 MW power capacity.
