The encouraging results were attributable to the contribution from the work in progress of the Mumbai monorail project which consists of the preliminary design works for rolling stock, switches, signaling and communications systems.

For the first quarter of 2009, the logistics engineering division which consists of rail, coach and special purpose vehicles units improved its revenue contribution to the Scomi Engineering Group to 61% as compared to 36% registered in the corresponding quarter in 2008.

Scomi Engineering continues to derive the majority of its Revenue from the international operations with overseas contribution of 72% for first quarter of 2009 as compared to 56% registered in first quarter of 2008. The contribution was led by India through the commencement of the monorail project followed by Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, Brunei and Thailand for its machine shop business.

On the domestic front, recently the Scomi Engineering rail project team has successfully delivered the Rectifier and “Transformer to the KLCC LRT sub-station which is part of the Kelana Jaya Line upgrading of the electrical and mechanical (E&M) systems project. “We are very pleased with the delivery of the equipment for the Kelana Jaya line E & M systems, as this indicates the confidence and acknowledgement of Scomi’s capabilities in its delivery to customers,” said Scomi Engineering president, Hilmy Zaini.

As part of its marketing exercise, the company will continue to seek opportunities on Rail related projects in various cities in India, the Middle East, Nigeria and Brazil.

Meanwhile, despite the volatility in oil prices, the machine shop division will continue to increase its machine utilization to generate optimum revenue from the extensive network of Machine Shop in 10 locations.

“We anticipate the performance of the machine shop will be optimized via the opening and expansion of existing facilities. Moving forward, our locations such as Songkhla, Thailand and Darwin, Australia will move to bigger and enhanced facilities,” concluded Hilmy Zaini.
