The power plant is expected to be commissioned during the Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012-17). NTPC has already started preliminary studies for the project at Barethi in Madhya Pradesh and the project report is expected by the end of this year.

A senior NTPC official was quoted by The Hindu as saying that one of the major reasons for shifting this mega project to Madhya Pradesh is that the state government has gone out of the way to assure us that land, water and fuel for the project would not be a problem. NTPC is now conducting site-specific studies for the project.

With a current generating capacity of approximately 30,644MW, NTPC has embarked on plans to become a 75,000MW company by 2017.
