Eurotunnel will own 49% in the joint venture, while Star Capital will own the remaining 51%.

The JV companies conducted studies, which shows that a twin cable 500MW Direct Current (DC) interconnector could be safely installed inside the service tunnel of the Channel Tunnel.

The EUR250m ($353m). transmission line will stretch over 75km between the two national networks.

The ElecLink project is expected to augment the cross Channel capacity by 25% to 2500MW and will deliver electricity to Kent’s Sellindge substation from France’s RTE Les Mandarins substation via 75km of capital.

The line is expected to be operational by 2015.

Construction of this transmission will help to address the rising demand for electricity in both France and the UK.

These lines will help to manage the volatility of renewable power, most importantly wind power by spreading power from areas of high wind to low.
