Roma North gas development project is expected to commence production by the end of 2019.

Roma North Gas development project is a part of the Western Surat gas project being undertaken by Senex Energy in the Surat Basin, approximately 30km north of Roma, Queensland, Australia.

The initial Roma North gas project development plan involves gas production from Glenora and Eos natural gas blocks in the Surat Bain, a gas processing facility, and associated pipelines.

Senex announced the final investment decision (FID) for the Western Surat gas project in October 2018 and started construction on the Roma North gas project in November 2018.

The onshore gas project is expected to produce up to 16 terajoules of natural gas a day (TJ/d), starting from 2019.

The other gas development project being undertaken by Senex in the Surat Basin is the Project Atlas, which is scheduled to commence operation in 2019. The Project Atlas is located approximately 20km south-west of Wandon

Both the projects involve the construction of a total of 110 development wells, two processing plants, and associated pipeline works.

Western Surat gas project details

The Western Surat gas project will occupy 915km² and comprise the development of up to 425  production wells in 12 gas producing blocks over a time span of approximately 30 years.

The mega gas project will produce up to 50TJ/d  of natural gas at its full capacity.

Roma North gas project development details

Roma North, the first gas development project within the Western Surat gas project, will comprise four blocks namely, Tethys, Mimas, Eos, and Glenora.

The Glenora and Eos natural gas blocks are being developed in the initial phase of the project.

Senex has already completed the drilling of 30 appraisal wells in the Glenora and Eos blocks.

The proven and probable reserves of the two blocks are estimated to be 32 million barrels of oil-equivalent (Mboe).

Roma North gas project infrastructure

Roma North gas project involves a 16TJ/d modular gas processing facility consisting of four gas compressors along with one tri-ethylene glycol (TEG) dehydration unit, a metering station, and a 6km-long pipeline.

The pipeline will  supply gas from the Roma North’s processing facility to an existing pipeline connected to the Santos-operated Gladstone liquefied natural gas (GLNG) plant in Queensland.

The gas processing facility can be expanded to 24TJ/d capacity to accommodate production from the Mimas and Tethys blocks, which are yet to be appraised.

Gas sales agreement

Senex Energy signed a 20-year gas sales agreement with GLNG in September 2015, to supply up to 50TJ/d of processed natural gas.

Contractors involved with Roma North gas project

Wasco Energy’s Australian subsidiary Wasco Australia was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Roma North gas processing plant as well as the pipeline in November 2018.

Wasco began early civil works for the processing and transportation infrastructure related to the Roma North gas development project in the same month.
