PEMEX’s subsidiary Pemex Exploration and Production has recorded three discovery wells in the first quarter of 2009, all of which are producing super light crude.
The company has drilled the Bricol-1 and Cupache-1 wells at its Cinco Presidentes project in the southern marine basin. The wells confirmed preliminary production of 5200 bpd and 1300 bpd, correspondingly. The third discovery was in the Juliva project, where PEMEX drilled the Bajilum-1 well. The well had initial production of 7200 bpd.
PEMEX also acquired 8,638 kilometers of 2D seismic data in the first quarter, up from just 711 kilometers year-on-year. The huge increase was because of works in the Golfo de Mexico B project in the southern and eastern deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The total 3D seismic data gained in the three-month period was 3,858 square kilometers, up 7.07% year-on-year. The increase in PEMEX’s 3D seismic works was attributed to the Gulf of Mexico Sur deep-water project and expansion in the Chicontepec field, which is in Puebla and Veracruz states.
Mexican oil output declined below 2.7 million bpd in the first quarter of 2009. The company hopes that new projects on land and in the Gulf will eventually bring production back above three million bpd.
Tamil would go into commercial production around 2015. PEMEX earlier said that Tamil has oil with a gravity of 18 API. The gravity of crude oils is measured in accordance with the American Petroleum Institute’s formula.
