Google Energy & Sustainability senior policy counsel Michael Terrell said in a company blog that "the challenge is that the rules governing electricity distribution were written for last century’s grid."
The latest grant would be to support policy reforms in three areas: smarter electricity rates; access to electricity markets for consumers and other businesses; and open data policies that give customers access to their own energy data.
Michael noted that these policy reforms, along with the new technologies now being deployed, would empower consumers to make smarter energy choices.
In addition, it could ameliorate real-time management of the power grid, and assist in facilitating more renewable energy while bring down overall costs.
"We hope this grant will help catalyze change and look forward to seeing progress in the years to come," Michael added.
