The company said that with the completion of the work, energy efficiency has improved 5.3% and CO2 emissions will be reduced by 59,000 tons a year. Furthermore, the new furnaces can use a wide variety of raw materials such as LPG, NGL, kerosene and light oil, resulting in greater flexibility in choosing feedstock.

Due to this and other steps, the Showa Denko Group will be able to reduce its CO2 emissions by 6% from the 1990 levels in compliance with the Kyoto Protocol, without relying on emission trading, the company said.

The energy-efficiency-improvement work at the ethylene plant in Oita was supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization as part of its project for assisting companies to rationalize the use of energy.
