The company plans to expand capacity at the Gare Palma coal mine from the present 6.25 million tons per annum to 12 million tons to feed its power plant at Tamnar, also in the Chhattisgarh state.

An environment ministry panel, however, directed the company to secure the fore-mentioned clearances before environmental clearances could be accorded.

According to an expert appraisal committee the increase in production would cut down the years of coal availability that was determined originally.

With a 1,000MW capacity, the Tamnar thermal power plant is located just 7km from the mine.

Jindal Power had earlier proposed a capacity expansion at the power plant to 3,400MW and consequently sought expansion at the mine.
