The Jawaharpur super thermal power station is a 1.32GW coal-fired power project under construction in the Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, India.
The two-unit facility is being developed and will be operated by Jawaharpur Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (JVUNL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (UPRVUNL).
Construction on the project was started in December 2016 after obtaining clearance certificate from India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) in October 2016.
Unit one the Jawaharpur super thermal power plant is scheduled for commissioning in December 2020, while unit two is expected to commence operation in the first half of 2021.
The 1.3GW facility is expected to operate at a plant load factor of 85%. It is expected to generate approximately 1.93 million tonnes (Mt) of coal ash a year which will be utilised by the cement factories.
Location and site details
The Jawaharpur super thermal power station is being developed on an 865acre-site north of Malawan village, approximately 18km away from Etah, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India.
The project site is located near the Delhi-Kanpur National Highway, approximately 70km away from the administrative headquarters of Aligarh.
The other coal-fired power projects under construction in Uttar Pradesh include the 1.9GW Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant and the Panki Extension Project.
Plant make-up
The Jawaharpur thermal power station will consist of two super critical coal-fired units of 660MW capacity each.
Each unit will comprise a 2,180 tonnes per hour (TPH) boiler and a 3000rpm steam turbine. The operating steam pressure and temperature for each unit will be 247 bar and 565ºC respectively.
Both units of the power plant will also be equipped with electro static precipitators (ESP) for emissions control.
The other components of the power station will include a 275m-high twin flue stack, a coal handling facility and an ash handling plant. The height clearance for the power plant’s chimney was obtained in June 2015.
Coal and water supply
The Jawaharpur thermal power station is estimated to require approximately 5.52 million tonnes (Mt) of coal a year which will be sourced from the Saharpur-Jamarpani coal block of the Rajmahal coalfields in Jharkhand.
The water for the power station will be sourced from the Lower Ganga Canal located approximately 22km away from the project site.
Power evacuation
The electricity generated from the Jawaharpur Super thermal power station will be evacuated in to the grid via a new 400/220/132kV substation at Firozabad.
Jawahar Firozabad Transmission Limited, a project specific special purpose vehicle (SPV) which was incorporated as a wholly owned subsidiary of REC Transmission Projects Company, is responsible for the development of transmission network for evacuating power from the plant.
The SPV was transferred to Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) in December 2018.
The transmission lines for the power plant include a 765kV Mainpuri-Greater Noida single circuit line and a 400kV Jawaharpur-Firozabad double circuit line.
Contractors involved in the Jawaharpur power project
Doosan Power Systems India was awarded a £740m ($1.15bn) engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the Jawaharpur super thermal power station in December 2016.
GE Power was awarded a £37m ($49m) contract to supply of electrostatic precipitators (ESP) and ambient air quality aontrol systems (AAQCS) for the power plant in October 2017.
German technology group ThyssenKrupp was awarded a £87m ($115m) contract to provide the coal handling system for the Jawaharpur power plant in July 2018, while Loesche was selected to supply vertical roller coal mills for the project in April 2018.
Texcel Engineers was contracted for the erection, testing and commissioning of power cycle piping for the plant in February 2018.
