A gas field with an expected reserve of six trillion cubic feet was also encountered in the central province of Fars, Nozari added.

The report comes on the back of recent announcements from Tehran of the discovery of eight new oil fields in April 2009 alone. No information has yet been provided on the exact amounts of their reserves.

Iran controls around 5% of global oil supply.

Iran has made a partnership with ONGC to produce liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Farzad gas field in Farsi block, which is expected to hold recoverable gas reserves of 12.8 trillion cubic feet.

Iran has not yet exported any LNG but says it will be able to pump 77 million tons annually by 2014.`
