Under the agreement, Abengoa will be responsible for the engineering, design and construction of the 215MW biomass power plant, which will use raw material wood chips and agro-residues to generate electricity.
The power plant, which is considered to be the largest upon completion, will feature Circulated Fluidized Bed technology to transform biomass into high pressure steam, which subsequently passes through a steam turbine to produce electricity.
The project, which is expected to cost more than €315m, will create up to 1,100 jobs during the execution phase.
Additionally, the plant will generate clean energy, which is free from CO2, for use by the power supply industry.
Approximately 100MW of thermal energy will also be distributed to supply heating to industries and households in the city of Ghent.
Abengoa will support Belgium’s efforts to achieve the environmental objectives set by the European Union through the development of the new biomass power plant.
The company operates biomass plants in Europe, Latin America and the US.
