The new pumped storage power station will be constructed near the Nesher quarry next to Haifa. The power station is planned for completion by 2015.
National Infrastructures Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer has granted the first license for a pumped storage station about two weeks back to P.S.P. Investments for a 300 MW station, which is to be constructed at Maale Gilboa. Ben-Eliezer was hoping for 800 MW from pumped storage plants by the middle of the next decade.
The Clal Industries license is conditional – if the operator meets all the conditions, then they will receive a permanent license.
Clal Energy chief executive officer Dan Vardi said it had not been decided what type of water, whether fresh or treated sewage, would be utilized to meet the station’s 1.3 million-cubic meter needs.
