The HVDC cable system has been designed to more than double the power capacity from 1,000MW to about 2,600MW, whilst expanding the cable’s reach to distances from less than 1,000km to 1,500km. Transmission losses can be limited to under 5%.

In addition to providing 64% increase over 320kV, the new cable system can efficiently deliver power through densely populated or environmentally sensitive areas or coastal and open-sea applications.

ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer said: "This major technology breakthrough will change the feasibility of renewable energy projects and play a defining role in using underground and subsea high voltage cables to integrate renewables over long distances."

Additionally, the new technology provides savings in capital and operational expenses as well as supports the DC grids development.

The innovative cable system features cables that use a Borealis-developed new DC cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation material.
