GE Vernova has been awarded a contract by Dominion Energy South Carolina to modernise two hydropower units at the 206MW Saluda hydropower plant in South Carolina, US.
Through the initiative, the parties aim to enhance the American hydropower facility’s reliability, performance, and operational flexibility, along with extending its lifespan.
As part of the project, GE Vernova will provide engineering, procurement, construction, and installation services.
The scope includes replacing turbines in Units 1 and 3 with aerating turbines and rehabilitating the Unit 3 generator. The first upgraded unit is scheduled for completion by 2027.
GE Vernova’s patented aerating turbine technology will increase dissolved oxygen levels in the water. This innovation is expected to improve water quality in the Saluda River, support aquatic life, and preserve South Carolina’s natural resources.
The company’s new technology has been previously deployed in certain hydropower projects, including the High Rock project in North Carolina.
Hydropower accounts for nearly 27% of the US’ utility-scale renewable electricity generation and 5.7% of its total utility-scale electricity generation, according to a report by the US Department of Energy (DoE).
GE Vernova hydro power CEO Frederic Ribieras said: “Our team is delighted to bring its advanced solution to a site that has been serving the state for almost a century.
“This project shows that through both electricity generation and water management, hydropower can provide many benefits to communities, for a very long time”.
Located on the Saluda River approximately 16.1km west of Columbia, the Saluda hydropower plant is nearly a century-old facility. The project began operations in 1930 and currently houses five Francis hydropower units.
Initially constructed to support the growth of Columbia’s textile industry, the facility also serves flood control, water supply, and recreational purposes.
Its construction created the 48,000-acre Lake Murray, which remains a popular destination for local residents.
The collaboration between GE Vernova and Dominion Energy builds on their long-standing relationship. Nearly 70% of Dominion Energy’s fleet relies on GE Vernova’s technology.
Dominion Energy generation vice president Iris Griffin said: “Our current turbines at Saluda Hydro have performed safely and successfully for more than 90 years.
“Investing in their replacement will help maintain the facility’s long-term reliability and, most importantly, continue to safely serve our customers for many years to come.”
