The installation is within the framework of the Sistema de Telegestión y Automatización de la Red (STAR) project for implementing next generation power grids.

The initiative, which is underway in nine autonomous communities, will complete in 2018 and have an overall investment of € 2,000m.

It includes the replacement of 10.3 million meters and the adaptation of about 80,000 transformation stations.

Iberdrola has adapted 14,500 transformation stations to allow them for remote management, supervision and automation.

The company will have renovated 35% of its metering fleet in Spain in compliance with the law by the end of 2014.

The deployment started in Castellón city in 2010 and Iberdrola installed the technology in the remaining regions.

Iberdrola has already issued 18.7 million bills based on remote meter readings via remote management.
Iberdrola said by using smart grids it is detecting grid incidents much earlier, remotely and automatically reconfiguring if required.

The company has awarded smart-grid related contracts, worth €450m, to several manufacturers and suppliers in recent years.
