Russian utility RAO UES said that the new power unit will have an efficiency of 59%, which will save fuel by up to 20% to 25%, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a third, compared to conventional steam power generators. The unit is expected to be operational by the second quarter of fiscal 2009.

According to RAO UES, the new combined-cycle unit will be one of the most advanced, efficient and environment-friendly power units in Russia and Europe, and will have the largest capacity in Moscow. The new unit’s aggregate installed generation capacity will be 420MW of electricity and 265 Gcal/h of heat.

According to RAO UES, this is the first time in Russia’s electric power sector that a new combined-cycle generation unit will be constructed on a turnkey basis by an EPC-contractor selected through a tender. The contract was won by French engineering conglomerate Alstom.

RAO UES said that the combined-cycle unit is being implemented under the company’s investment program until 2011, as well as under Mosenergo’s development and modernization program that the company has jointly created with the Russian Academy of Sciences.

RAO UES said that, within the framework of Mosenergo’s development program, construction of new combined-cycle units is already underway at the CHPP-22 and CHPP-27 power stations. In 2007-2011, Mosenergo plans to bring 4,497.5MW of generation capacity online.
