Tata Power has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Advantage Assam 2.0 to advance renewable energy development in the Indian state.
Under the agreement, Tata Power will collaborate with the Assam Government to establish up to 5,000 MW of renewable and clean energy projects, including solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage, with an estimated investment of INR300bn ($3.42bn) over the next five years.
The MoU was signed by Dr Krishna Kumar Dwivedi, Principal Secretary (Power), Government of Assam, and Dr Praveer Sinha, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Power, in the presence of Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and other senior government officials.
As part of the partnership, the Assam Government will assist in identifying and allocating approximately 20,000 acres of encumbrance-free government land on a lease basis, along with support for acquiring private land suitable for renewable energy projects.
The state will also facilitate infrastructure development to ensure efficient transmission connectivity and promote the establishment of Renewable Energy Parks through state agencies.
The initiative will further include the identification of land for Group Captive projects, enabling industries and tea plantations to access clean energy under Assam’s land allotment and industrial policies. To accelerate project implementation, the Assam Government has committed to providing single-window clearances for statutory approvals, financial incentives, and research collaborations to drive innovation in the renewable sector. Additionally, skill development programmes will be introduced to train a workforce for project execution and operations.
Assam has been making significant strides in renewable energy, leveraging its natural resources to unlock an estimated renewable energy potential of 14,487 MW, with solar power leading the expansion. The state has set a target of achieving 500 MW of solar capacity by 2027. The collaboration with Tata Power aligns with Assam’s clean energy goals and supports its broader energy transition strategy.
In a separate agreement, Tata Power’s subsidiary, Tata Power Renewable Energy, has signed an MoU with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to enhance renewable energy adoption and improve energy efficiency across the state. The partnership will focus on scaling up rooftop solar projects under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY), while also generating approximately 3,000 direct job opportunities to support Assam’s renewable energy transition and economic growth.
Tata Power has already made notable progress in Assam’s clean energy sector, with a 20 MW solar rooftop capacity, more than 300 home EV chargers, and over 20 public EV charging stations. These developments contribute to the state’s push for sustainable energy solutions and electric vehicle adoption.
Through these strategic initiatives, Tata Power continues to play a key role in advancing India’s renewable energy landscape. Its ongoing efforts in Assam and Odisha reflect its commitment to accelerating the adoption of clean energy and contributing to India’s net-zero objectives.
Tata Power CEO and managing director Dr Praveer Sinha said: “These MoUs marks significant steps towards developing renewable and clean energy capacity, leveraging Assam’s vast potential in solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage.
“With strong policy support, infrastructure development, and skill enhancement initiatives, this collaboration will not only strengthen the state’s energy security but also drive economic growth and job creation.
“Tata Power remains committed to delivering sustainable energy solutions that align with Assam Government’s vision for a greener future and India’s ambitious target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.”
