RWE npower, a part of the RWE Group, has announced that it is planning to set up a biomass combined heat and power plant in the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia together with food manufacturer Nahr-Engel and municipal utility Stadtwerke Goch.

RWE Innogy Cogen, a subsidiary of RWE npower (formerly RWE Innogy), holds an 80% share in the company; while 20% is owned by PBG-Projektgesellschaft Biomassefeuerung Goch, while Nahr-Engel and Stadtwerke Goch each own the remaining interest in equal parts.

RWE npower said that, the planned investment volume is approximately E30 million. The purpose of the plant, which is fueled by natural untreated wood, is to supply heat for the manufacturing of dry products at Nahr-Engel.

Together with the Wittgenstein biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plant, which is currently under construction, and the planned facility in Troisdorf, Goch is now the third biomass project of RWE Innogy Cogen in North-Rhine Westphalia.

The Goch CHP plant is planned to have an output of approximately 30MW of thermal power and 7MW of electric power. The electricity that is generated is fed into the public grid, said the company.

The plant in Goch is fired by about 90,000 metric tonnes of untreated natural wood per year, available from local sources. As the burning of wood is CO2-neutral, the company claims to reduce approximately 37,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
