The new discovery was made in the ‘Gamma Prospect‘, in the Contract Area D, 140km offshore from Tripoli, in Libya.

The discovery exploration Well B1-16/3 is located 5km to the North of the producing Bahr Essalam Gas Field.

Drilled in water depth of about 150m, the well reached a total depth of 9780ft.

The Bahr Essalam gas and condensate field is owned and operated by Mellitah Oil & Gas (MOG), a joint venture (JV) between Eni and Libyan state-owned oil company National Oil Corporation (NOC).

The well, which encountered gas and condensates in the Metlaoui Group of Eocene age, has capacity to deliver, in production configuration, in excess of 7,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (Boepd).

Eni said in a statement: “The drilling of the Gamma prospect is part of the “near field” exploration strategy of Eni, targeting opportunities, that in case of success can exploit synergies with existing infrastructures reducing the time to market and providing additional gas to the local market and export.”

The firm said that the well represents its further discovery in Libyan offshore Area D, following the discoveries made in 2015.

Eni, through its subsidiary Eni North Africa BV, operates the Contract Area D with a 100% stake in the exploration phase.

In Libya, Eni has currently produces 350,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in equity.
